XXXIX Winter School in Maj Institute of Pharmacology Polish Academy of Science

XXXIX Winter School was held from 2 to 4 March 2022. The theme selected for this year’s edition was Metabolic dysfunctions and diseases of the central nervous system. Due to the epidemic situation the conference was held on-line. Presented lectures were centered on metabolic processes disorders in the etiopathogenesis of diseases of the central nervous system issues. The most important source of energy for the brain cells is glucose, and its metabolism primarily in glial cells, provides the energy necessary for the proper function of neurons, in particular synthesis and function of neurotransmitters and the elimination of free radicals.

According to the latest research altered metabolic activity and the dysfunction of mitochondria are crucial in the pathogenesis of CNS diseases and in the course of neurodegenerative processes. A better understanding of the etiology of these dysfunctions is essential in the search for new and more effective methods of treatment.
