The events of 1954-2004 were compiled on the basis of the publication 50 years of the Institute of Pharmacology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Krakow, edited by prof. Barbara Przewłocka.





1954

• On November 1, establishment of the Department of Pharmacology of the Polish Academy of Sciences

• prof. Janusz Supniewski becomes the head of Department of Pharmacology

• Department of Pharmacology publishes its own journal Dissertationes Pharmaceuticae

1955

  •  The PAUMedicinal Plant Research Station at Radzikowski Street is incorporated into Department of Pharmacology

1956

  • First publications released from Department of Pharmacology
  • prof. J. Vetulani starts working as a volunteer


1957

  •     first publication released from Department of Pharmacology published in international journal

1958

  • department ofHistology and Histochemistry is established

1959

  • first doctoral degrees  (R. Gryglewski, T. Marczyński, S. Kohlmunzer)

1963

  • first habilitation thesis (A. Dłużniewski, R. Gryglewski

1965

·        prof. A. Dłużniewski performes a duty as a head of Department of Pharmacology

·         prof. Józef Hano becomes the head of Department of Pharmacology

·        The Polish Pharmacological Society is established

  • Prof. J. Maj returns from Lublin
  • Relocation of Department of Pharmacology from Grzegórzecka Street to Bronowice, Ojcowska Street

  • Fusion with Department of Immunology

  • First doctoral thesis

1974

  • Creation of the Institute of Pharmacology PAS
  • Group PAS-Polfa is created

1975

  • Fusion with Department of Biogenic Amines in Łódź

1976

  • establishment of the Independent Gastroenterology Laboratory
  • beginning of the move to the new building at Smętna Street

1977

  • prof. J. Maj becomes the Director of the Institute
  • On March 22, the official opening of the new IP building
  • prof. E. Przegaliński moved from Lublin to Krakow
  • highest employment of 231 people (with the Department of Biogenic Amines Plant)

1979

  • The Laboratory of Pharmacokinetics and Drug Metabolism is established at the Department of Biochemistry
  • The Laboratory of New Drugs is established at the Department of Pharmacology

 1980

  • "Solidarność" group by Institute is established

1983

  •         The Neuropeptide Research Laboratory is established at the Department of Pharmacology

1984

  • organization of the first Winter School entitled "Nuropeptides"


1985

  •        establishment of the Foundation. J. J. Supniewski

1988

  •         highest employment of 204 people

1989

  • the Department of Immunobiology is established (instead of the laboratory)
  • the Department of Physiology is established (instead of the Gastroenterology Laboratory)
  • the Department of Pharmacokinetics and Drug Metabolism is established (instead of the laboratory)
  • A Garden of Medicinal Plants is being created in place of the Agrotechnics Laboratory at the Department of Phytochemistry
  • The Neurobiology Laboratory at the Department of Pharmacology is established
  • The Department of Histology and Histochemistry is liquidated
  • beginning of research in central and ministerial research programs

1990

  •        obtaining the right to award the degree of habilitated doctor

1991

  •  obtaining the first KBN grants
  • first habilitation at the institute
  •  The Editorial Department is established
  • The Polish Neuroscience Society is established

1993

·        prof. Edmund Przegaliński becomes the director of the Institute

·        suspension of recruitment for doctoral studies

1995

  • obtaining the first European Community grant
  • the New Drug Research Department is established (instead of the laboratory)
  • the Department of Neurobiology is established (instead of the laboratory)
  • The Neuropeptide Research Department changes its name to Molecular Neuropharmacology

1997

  • The Laboratory of Neurotransmitter Receptors and Metabolism is established at the Department of Biochemistry
  • The Drug Addiction Laboratory is established at the Department of Molecular Neuropharmacology

1998

  • The Department of Immunobiology is liquidated
  • The Intracellular Signal Laboratory is established at the Department of Biochemistry
  • the Pain Research Laboratory and the Gene Therapy Laboratory, joint for CMUJ and IF, are established at the Department of Molecular Neuropharmacology

1999

  • the following laboratories are being established in the Department of Pharmacology: Brain Pharmacology and Biostructure, Biochemical Pharmacology and Behavioral Pharmacology

2000

  •         establishment of the 2nd Local Ethical Committee for Animal Experiments

2002

  • Institute obtains the status of Center of Excellence in Neuropsychopharmacology - FRAM

2003

  • Creation of Doctoral School

2004

  •         reconstruction and modernization of the Library and Reading Room

 2005

  • change of the title of the journal published by Institute to Pharmacological Reports

2006

  • The Department of Pain Pharmacology at the Department of Molecular Neuropharmacology is established
  • The Laboratory of Drug Addiction at the Department of Pharmacology is liquidated
  • reconstruction and modernization of the Animal House (completed in 2007)

2007

  •      prof. Krzysztof Wędzony becomes the Director of the Institute
  • Departments of Brain Biochemistry and Department of Neurochemistry are established (instead of the Department of Biochemistry)
  •     the Laboratories of Neuromediator Receptors and Metabolism, Intracellular Signaling and Behavioral Neurobiology, existing at the Department of Biochemistry, are being liquidated
  • The Laboratory of the Neurobiology of Trace Elements is established at the Department of Neurobiology

2010

  • The institute ibrary starts subscriptions to electronic journals
  • Beginning of the renovation and modernization of the institute's main building (renovation works were completed in 2013)

2011

  •        co-organizes Interdisciplinary Doctoral Studies "Molecular Sciences for Medicine", co-financed by the EU

2012

  •        Institute obtains the status of the KNOW National Scientific Research Center

2013

  • the Laboratory of Pain Pathophysiology is established at the Department of Pain Pharmacology
  • The Laboratory of Neurobiology of Emotions and Cognitive Processes is established at the Department of New Drug Research
  • The Laboratory of Transgenic Models is established at the Department of Molecular Neuropharmacology

2014

  • Incorporation of Pharmacological Reports journal to Elsevier, implementation of an electronic system for editing and producing the journal
  • the Scientific Information Center, Library and Archives are established by combining the Scientific Information and Documentation Department and the Archive

2016

  • Institute takes 4th place in the competition of the National Council of Doctoral Students and the Council of the Doctoral Students' Self-Government of the Polish Academy of Sciences "for the most post-doctoral institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences" - PROPAN 2016

2017

  • prof. Władysław Lasoń becomes the director of the Institute
  • The Department of the Pharmacology of Addiction is established (instead of the laboratory)
  • transfer of the Laboratory of Neurobiology of Emotions and Cognitive Processes to the Department of Pharmacology
  • Institute together with other research units of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Jagiellonian University, co-organizes the Community Doctoral Studies "Interdisciplinarity for Innovative Medicine" (InterDokMed)
  • Institute takes second place in the competition for the most postdoctoral institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences - PROPAN 2017

2019

  • Institute is named with prof. Jerzy Maj
